Democrats are coping with Trump’s success in ending the Gaza War by claiming that Biden had offered the same thing, but that Trump and Israel colluded to get him defeated. Their source: ‘Trust me, bro!’

Here is what they are saying:

  • Twitter Intellectual Matthew Yglesias: A lot of forgetting that there was in fact a ceasefire in place negotiated by the Biden administration that didn’t stick because Trump came into office and undermined it.

  • Matthew Chapman from Raw Story: This Gaza peace deal is kind of like how Trump killed Obama’s TPP trade deal when he came into office, then later brokered USMCA, which was basically just TPP but just for Canada and Mexico. He blew up his predecessor’s achievement, then redid it, but worse, and claimed credit.

  • Anshel Pfeffer from The Economist: There’s still so much that can go wrong until hostages start coming out from Gaza and there’s an actual ceasefire but it’s closer now than it’s been. If it happens, important to remember that this deal is basically the original proposal Biden extracted from Netanyahu 8 months ago.

Why are they saying this? Because they could not give Trump or Netanyahu, both of whom they hate, any credit. They were quiet for a few days, but they have finally figured out their message. This line is going to only become more prominent. To preempt them, here are some facts:

  • Biden negotiated a ceasefire in January 2025;

  • The deal’s Phase I was implemented, and Hamas released some hostages;

  • In February and March, there were negotiations to extend the ceasefire and get all the hostages released, but Hamas refused;

  • During the negotiations, Brett McGurk, who had been Biden’s envoy for ceasefire negotiations, said that Hamas was “playing games” with releasing the hostages, just like it did when he was negotiating a ceasefire, and Trump was right to add to the pressure;

  • In March, after Hamas refused to release the remaining hostages, Israel resumed the war.

Now, these Democrats can speculate all they want, but McGurk literally negotiated the Biden ceasefire. When he blames Hamas for its collapse, I’m going to trust the guy who wrote the deal over Democratic hacks.

Why did the Trump deal work, unlike the Biden agreements?

  • Hamas thought that it could get away with breaking agreements with Israel, and Biden would moderate Israel’s response, and it was right.

  • Biden even stopped the shipment of munitions and other equipment like military bulldozers needed for the war to Israel. For the longest time, it didn’t allow Israel to enter Rafah, and it never allowed Israel to enter Gaza City.

  • Hamas thought that Trump would act the same way, so it kept playing games. But you can’t play games with Trump.

  • Trump had Israel’s back, unlike Biden. He joined Israel in bombing Iran. He approved of Israel’s plan to enter Gaza City, Hamas’s last stronghold, in September. He put pressure on Hamas’s backers, like Qatar, to get Hamas to a deal.

  • Hamas realized that, unlike Biden, Trump would not turn on Israel’s back. So it released all the hostages.

Sure, the deals look the same on paper, but the new sheriff is one tough guy who, unlike Biden, won’t let you get away with reneging. It’s very easy: Have your friends’ back, and make sure that your enemies know that you have their backs, and your friends will get the job done. Be wimpy about supporting your friends, and the enemy will try to exploit that.
