If you think government shutdown drama is just political theater, think again — this fight is about how much the federal government spends, and whether Congress has the will to ever cut it.

In this episode of Breaking Battlegrounds, Chuck Warren and Sam Stone break down the razor-thin House vote to avert a shutdown (217–212) and talk with Congressman Mike Simpson about what happens next as the bill heads to the Senate.

Simpson didn’t sugarcoat the stakes: Democrats are pushing an alternative continuing resolution that adds roughly a trillion dollars in new spending, reverses provisions in the GOP’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OB3), and seeks more funding for personal security and other programs. Republicans, meanwhile, are offering what Simpson calls a “clean” CR — simply keeping spending at current levels until the full appropriations process is finished.

But the bigger issue, Simpson argues, is America’s $37 trillion national debt — and the political difficulty of cutting anything from the federal budget. “No matter what you cut,” he said, “somebody says you’re taking food out of the mouths of children.”

This episode is an unflinching look at what’s really driving the shutdown brinkmanship — and why every fight over spending now feels like a battle for the country’s financial future.

**Chuck Warren: **So the House passed a bill to avert the government shutdown. It passed by 217 to 212, and now it goes to the Senate where I'm sure the negotiations begin. What do Democrats want the 212 that voted against us? What are they seeking to avoid a government shutdown?

**Congressman Mike Simpson: **Well first of all you gotta remember when we had the CR in March that kept the government open. Chuck Schumer over in the Senate decided to vote forward. He did the right thing frankly did not let the government shut down he voted for it. And he just got his rear end handed to him by by Democratic constituency out there. And so now they’re in the mode that they've got to stand up and fight.

They put an alternative that they will vote on in the Senate which is the Democratic alternative to the Republican continuing resolution which is our continuing resolution is as clean as they can get it just continues the government funding at certain level at the at the same level of the currently exist until we get our appropriation bills done. Which were in the process of doing but they want to add in about a trillion dollars of spending overturning some of the provisions in the one big beautiful bill or OB3 and they want whole bunch of money for personal security and and other things. So they're just trying to increase spending again.

And I will tell you the one thing that I’ve discovered I knew this before but has really been demonstrated. It is hard to cut spending and anybody that doesn't realize that this thirty seven trillion dollar debt that we have in this country that is eating us alive.

If we don't address that it'll it'll bring this country down and so we've got to make some tough decisions. But it's always hard to cut spending because no matter what you cut somebody's gonna say oh you're taking mosuths or food out of the mouth of babies are you not caring about our children or the health care anything else. We're trying to do it responsibly.
