Politicians are getting the message – and TV might define how they respond to it. Asked why the GOP lost the presidential election,Republican strategist Chuck Warren replied, “To be frank, we’re a Mad Men party in a Modern Family world.” Warren meant that conservatives are perceived as Right-wing misogynists living in a 60s fantasy of starched suits and fossilised values, while the Democrats are seen as a big, happy multicultural family. Of course the choice between the two parties isn’t nearly that stark (and, sorry, but I’d much rather have the ruthless advertisers running my economy), but Warren’s shorthand is pithy and accurate. After all, Romney won on competence and Obama on character. Expect the GOP candidate in 2016 to be much bigger on empathy.
